Reflecting on a Year of Empowerment and Action

As the year comes to a close, we reflect on a meaningful collaboration with the Athens Network of Collaborating Experts (ANCE) on Project EQUAL. This year, our collective efforts focused on addressing the pervasive issue of gender-based violence (GBV) and promoting awareness, education, and tangible actions within communities. The journey has been one of creativity, resilience, and dedication, as we worked together to spark conversations, inspire change, and empower individuals to stand against GBV.

To commemorate this impactful year, we’re proud to publish a series of 14 blogposts on Project EQUAL’s website that dive into the core achievements, challenges, and learnings of this project. These posts serve not only as a summary of our campaign so far but also as a tribute to the tireless efforts of everyone involved in the SPEAK Awareness-Raising Campaign. Through this series, we aim to shed light on the critical milestones and creative strategies that brought the campaign to life, amplifying its reach and fostering an enduring impact.

From engaging artists in an Open Call for creative contributions to crafting practical resources for bystanders, each blogpost highlights a unique aspect of the project. These entries showcase how art, community action, and education can intertwine to challenge societal norms and address the complex layers of GBV. We hope this blog series not only informs but also inspires others to join the fight against GBV and continue the conversation far beyond the year’s end.

Awareness and Action: Spotting and Combating GBV

Recognizing GBV in its many forms is a crucial first step in addressing it. Hence, we provided readers with a summary of essential tools and knowledge covered during the campaign to identify violence, understand its societal implications, and take meaningful action.

  • Recognizing GBV: These posts detailed the different forms of GBVverbal, physical, psychological, and more—equipping readers with awareness needed to identify and address these issues in their communities.

  • The Social-Ecological Model and Key Strategies: By exploring GBV through individual, relational, community, and societal lenses, these posts offered a comprehensive framework for intervention. Actionable steps were presented to inspire both personal and collective responsibility in fostering safer environments.

Empowering Bystanders: The Role of SPEAK!

The animated short film SPEAK! became a rallying cry for bystander intervention, urging viewers to reflect on their role in combating GBV. Paired with resources on the bystander effect, this part of the campaign aimed to transform passive observers into active allies.

  • The Bystander Effect: Practical guides and actionable strategies were shared to empower bystanders to step up and intervene when witnessing GBV, emphasizing that small actions can have a profound impact.

  • The Animated Short Film SPEAK!: Released on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, this visually compelling film spotlighted the transformative power of breaking silence. It connected deeply with audiences, driving home the importance of collective responsibility.

Creative Advocacy: The Open Call for Artists

The SPEAK Open Call was a cornerstone of the campaign, turning creativity into a platform for advocacy. This initiative invited visual artists, photographers, and digital creators to contribute works addressing GBV, empowering participants to use their art as a tool for change.

  • Power of Collective Action: The Open Call gained significant traction, thanks to support from influencers and notable media outlets like Marie Claire Greece. Their involvement helped broaden the campaign’s reach, inspiring both established and emerging artists to join the movement.

  • Artists as Changemakers: Each submission showcased unique perspectives, turning creativity into an agent of social change. These contributions highlighted the importance of artistic expression in challenging societal norms and advocating for equality.

  • Behind the Scenes: Organizing this initiative underscored the value of collaboration and the power of art in fostering a community united against GBV.

Global Impact: Highlighting Local Initiatives

The campaign’s reach extended far beyond Greece, with notable efforts such as the Tashkent event. This gathering in Uzbekistan brought women and experts together to discuss GBV, share experiences, and develop localized strategies for change. The inclusion of the animated film SPEAK! enriched discussions and inspired attendees to take action within their own communities.

From Social Media to Blog: Amplifying Impact

This blog series extends the conversation from our SPEAK Awareness-Raising Campaign. Through thoughtful storytelling and strategic communication, we’ve been able to translate digital content into actionable insights for communities. By summarizing the campaign’s key learnings, initiatives, and creative efforts, we aim to keep the momentum alive, sparking meaningful dialogue and encouraging active participation in the fight against GBV.

Looking Ahead

As we reflect on the accomplishments of this year, we are reminded of the power of collaboration, creativity, and shared responsibility. Each step we’ve taken—whether through awareness campaigns, artistic initiatives, or global dialogues—has been a testament to the transformative potential of collective action.

Looking ahead, we envision a world where every individual feels safe, empowered, and valued, and where equality is not just an aspiration but a reality. By breaking the silence, supporting victims, and fostering respectful relationships, we can create a culture of zero tolerance for violence and discrimination.

We invite you to join us in amplifying this mission. Whether by sharing these stories, engaging in dialogue, or taking action in your own communities, every contribution matters. Together, we can challenge the status quo, rewrite the narrative, and stand united against GBV.

Let’s keep the conversation alive, the momentum strong, and the vision clear: a safer, fairer, and more inclusive world for all.
