When Art Speaks: Transforming Silence Into Action Against GBV
Breaking the Silence: SPEAK Campaign’s Open Call for Change
The SPEAK Awareness-Raising Campaign, a cornerstone of Project EQUAL’s mission, issued an ambitious open call as part of the United Nations’ 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. The campaign sought to engage artists, creators, and storytellers from diverse backgrounds to confront and address the pervasive issue of GBV. This open call invited visual artists, photographers, digital creators, and other artistic souls to contribute works that champion equality, empowerment, and a culture of zero tolerance for violence and sexism.
Participants were encouraged to reflect the campaign’s core message—“DON’T SPEAK!”—by breaking the silence around GBV and spotlighting its complexities in innovative and impactful ways. Submissions ranged from bold visual pieces to intimate narratives, each offering a unique perspective on empowerment and advocacy. Artists explored different facets of GBV, shedding light on its hidden nuances while fostering dialogue and awareness.
The overwhelming response from well-known figures and emerging creators alike highlighted the power of art to create meaningful change, setting the stage for a campaign that would resonate far beyond the 16 days.
We are deeply grateful to every artist, creator, and storyteller who joined us in this journey. The diversity of perspectives and creativity showcased through their submissions is a powerful testament to the strength of our collective voice against GBV. From seasoned professionals to emerging talents, every contribution has played a vital role in amplifying this important message.
The Ripple Effect: Amplifying SPEAK! on Social Media and Beyond
The campaign garnered widespread support on social media, with influential figures like Zeta Douka, Lambros Fisfis, Elena Domazaki, and Yiorgos Hatzipavlou sharing the open call and the accompanying SPEAK! animated movie we created to inaugurate the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. Their posts amplified the campaign’s reach and sparked vibrant discussions, encouraging more individuals to engage with the cause.
The excitement didn’t stop there—Marie Claire Greece dedicated an entire feature to the open call, while Medidrops created an exquisite short film about the importance of facing and overcoming our fears as their message against GBV.
The campaign’s open call reached thousands of people, with submissions pouring in from across the globe. This overwhelming response is a reflection of the urgency and importance of raising awareness about GBV.
