Project EQUAL
We designed, developed, and implemented a multimedia campaign against gender-based violence in Uzbekistan.
Together we stand for gender equality.
Our project has a clear mission: to sensitize the local community in Uzbekistan to the pervasive issue of gender-based violence (GBV). Despite being a global epidemic, GBV can often manifest in ways so subtle that it goes unnoticed.
To establish a unified and impactful presence, we developed a project identity centered on the concept of equality. We chose a universal design by merging the visually striking symbol of the equal sign “=” with the widely recognized female gender symbol “♀”. This visual identity serves as a constant reminder of our commitment to gender equality, ensuring recognition and coherence across all campaign materials.
Building on this foundation, we conducted extensive research on GBV, examining its root causes, societal impacts, and unique prevalence in Uzbekistan. This research informed the creation of educational content designed to spark meaningful conversations. Featuring key statistics, debunked myths, and actionable steps, these materials use data-driven insights paired with culturally relevant messaging to challenge ingrained norms and empower communities to take action.
This groundwork culminated in the SPEAK Awareness-Raising Campaign, including the flagship animated short film SPEAK!, launched on November 25th, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, as part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. The film delivers a powerful call to action, focusing on the role of bystanders—those who witness acts of violence or oppression but often remain silent.
To reach younger audiences, we’ve adapted the film into a children’s book, fostering discussions about empathy, respect, and gender equality within families. Together, the film and book serve as tools to plant seeds of awareness and activism in the next generation.
We are also expanding our reach through an open call, collaborating with artists, influencers, and NGOs such as Women on Top and GenderSAFE. Contributors like Aristotelis Rigas, Zeta Douka, Lambros Fisfis, and Yiorgos Hatzipavlou have helped amplify the campaign’s impact, ensuring messages of empowerment and gender equality reach diverse audiences. Partnerships with local NGOs and international experts are further driving efforts to enact real change and reshape societal attitudes toward GBV.
Among the standout entries, Medidrops submitted a moving short film titled "There Is Definitely Beauty in Facing Your Fears!". Through a minimalist yet evocative style, it highlights courage and resilience, transforming moments of vulnerability into strength. Medidrops’ work perfectly complements the campaign’s mission, showcasing the transformative power of self-discovery and bravery.
The overwhelming response from artists and communities underscores the power of art to inspire meaningful change, extending the campaign’s impact far beyond the 16 Days of Activism.
